After Snow in the Mountains

Zheng Xie · Qing dynasty

At dawn I open the door: snow fills the mountains;

The sky clears, clouds pale, yet sunlight feels cold.

No drops yet fall from the eaves; plum blossoms are frozen,

A rare, pure solitude fills the scene.

What the poem means

Opening the door in the morning reveals snowy mountains. The sky is clear but the sunlight remains cold; the eaves do not drip and plum blossoms are frozen. A pale morning sun fits this scene.

Meet the poet

Zheng Xie, known as Banqiao, was a Qing poet and painter. This poem dwells on the clear chill after snow.
