Seeing Lingche Off

Liu Changqing · Tang dynasty

Deep green stands the Bamboo Grove Temple;

Distant, distant rings its evening bell.

Carrying his bamboo hat in the slanting sun,

He returns alone toward the far green hills.

What the poem means

Evening bells sound from a temple among bamboo. Carrying a bamboo hat, the friend walks alone into green hills in sunset light. The quiet farewell leaves a feeling of lasting care.
