Looking at the Snow on Zhongnan

Zu Yong · Tang dynasty

The shaded slopes of Zhongnan are lovely;

Their snow seems to float beside the clouds.

Clear light after snow brightens the treetops;

In the city the evening cold grows.

What the poem means

Snow on the shaded side of Zhongnan seems to float beside clouds. Clear light reaches the treetops while evening cold deepens in the city below. A distant view connects with a nearby feeling.

Meet the poet

Zu Yong was a Tang poet from Luoyang. Clear mountain light and the city’s evening chill reflect each other.
